Parent emotional regulation: A meta-analytic review of its association with parenting and child adjustment

Meta-analysis (53 studies, 2000-2020) of how parents' own emotion regulation relates to their parenting and to child outcomes. Adaptive parent emotion regulation showed small associations with more positive parenting (r~.18) and less negative parenting (r~-.15), and with better child regulation. Supports the idea that caregivers must tend to their own regulation to co-regulate well.
