Conceptual review synthesizing decades of praise research. Praise can help or harm intrinsic motivation depending on how it is given: it helps when sincere, specific, focused on controllable effort/strategy, autonomy-supportive, and free of social comparison; it can undermine motivation when controlling, insincere or person-focused.
