Narrative review of 69 prospective longitudinal studies. Physical punishment
consistently predicted increases in behavior problems over time and was not
associated with any positive outcomes. Effects held across child sex, ethnicity
and parenting warmth, with a dose-response pattern (more punishment, worse outcomes).
