Meta-analysis of 193 studies. Maternal depression was significantly associated with higher
internalizing, externalizing and general psychopathology and with more negative and less
positive child affect/behavior. All associations were statistically robust but small in
magnitude, underscoring that risk is probabilistic, not deterministic.
