The effect of the transition to parenthood on relationship quality: An 8-year prospective study

Eight-year prospective study of 218 couples. The birth of the first child produced a sudden, small-to-medium deterioration in observed and self-reported relationship functioning (both positive and negative aspects) that tended to persist. Childless couples declined more gradually without the abrupt drop, implicating the birth itself.
