Invisible Household Labor and Ramifications for Adjustment: Mothers as Captains of Households

Survey of 393 U.S. partnered mothers on the distribution of household management. Most reported sole responsibility for organizing schedules and maintaining order. Feeling disproportionately responsible for children's emotional needs predicted lower life and partner satisfaction, more role overload, and greater feelings of emptiness, independent of intimacy.
